Wall panelling - 20 Eastbourne Terrace

The Office Group (TOG) pioneered the concept of the shared workspace in the UK when it launched in 2003. Today it has more than 30 buildings in London, each including a range of facilities and flexible working areas and all with a unique style and interior design.

We worked closely with Paragon Interiors on the recent refurbishment of 20 Eastbourne Terrace for TGO – bringing the 1960s office building up-to-date and in line with TGO’s vision to create flexible and contemporary office accommodation. Following the redesign, the building now includes events spaces, nine meeting rooms of various sizes, office space, studios, a café, roof terrace, showers and bike storage.

The interior design restricted the materials used and also specified a limited colour palette of blue tones to achieve a minimalist scandi-inspired ‘Sky Garden’ style. Soft feature lighting together with indoor plants and greenery soften the surroundings to create a sense of ‘home-from-home’ space for office workers to relax as well as work in, something which was a key part of the design brief.

The bespoke joinery items including fabric-covered seating units and backless bookcases, which we created specifically for this project offer a more homely finish than more typical office seating and enclosed shelving units. We created these pieces using a combination of wood veneer and black matt metal supports for a retro-inspired yet contemporary space.

One of the driving forces of the design was the need to create space to allow staff to work anywhere within the building – not just at desks within the conventional office space. So as much emphasis was put on the areas like the café and break-out spaces as the main office. The finished café area features a mix of bar stool style seating, easy chairs and coffee tables as well as dining tables and chairs to suit different ways of working. The various common areas including the café were designed with a dual purpose; to provide a flexible workspace and encourage staff to relax and socialise.

20 Eastbourne Terrace also features a series of focus booths, which are designed to provide a defined space for individual focused work. We fitted each focus booth with wood veneer high level benching and bar stools for a distraction-free working environment as well as the option for a stand-up workspace.

As part of the project we also delivered high specification wood effect veneer wall panelling in the meeting rooms and corridors, specified to match the wood used for the bespoke furniture. We also designed and delivered a reception desk for TGO using the same dark wood veneer as seen in the kitchen area and completed with a stylish ribbed effect front panel manufactured from MDF with a high gloss spray finish to match the ceramic tile sample.

The refreshed office interior design went on to win the Recycled/Refurbished Workspace category award by the British Council for Offices shortly after completion in 2017.
